"Wildflowers don't care where they grow" ~ Dolly Parton
Disclaimer: No ground squirrels were harmed in the making of this blog...though many tried their darnedest...
Like many of you, I have been seeing amazing photos of the "Super Bloom" wildflowers posted all over Facebook and Instagram, so I was excited to go and see what all the fuss was about. My friend Julia and I made a plan to go out to Carrizo Plains this past Sunday to check it out for ourselves. We had been hearing conflicting details on the best location - Shell Creek Rd or Soda Lake, near the Carrizo Plains National Monument. Based on the most recent "intel", Soda Lake seemed to be the best considering we are at the tail end of the bloom.
I did some research on the BLM (Bureau of Land Management) website to get an idea of the area and any visitor tips. The website recommended bringing food, water, and a full tank of gas. There aren't any nearby gas stations - McKittrick is approximately 27 miles away in one direction and Santa Margarita is 40 in the other - and cell service is intermittent, at best.
Julia and I decided to make it a full adventure drive, so we packed up the car with the above mentioned items, road trip snack essentials (Ritz & EZ-Cheez, don't judge me), and some items for a picnic lunch (sandwiches, chips, and cookies).
Off we go!
We left San Luis Obispo around 9:45am and headed north (Northbound 101 to 58 East). The drive was pleasant and not a lot of cars on the road. It's nice to see our hillsides still green; usually they have faded back to brown by this time of year.
After a rousing sing-a-long of Dolly Parton's "Jolene" (don't judge us), we happened upon something you don't see every day - Bison! There were about a dozen near the side of the road, including young bison calves (is that the correct term?), so we pulled over for this rare photo op. It was so awesome!
I must say, I'm a little disappointed. There were flowers and some bright yellow patches, but no where near what I was expecting. We found a nice patch of wildflowers and pulled over to take the obligatory photos. It has become apparent that we have missed the prime "Super Bloom" time. The pictures turned out nice, though....if I do say so myself.
