"Always have an escape plan" ~ Unknown
I have wanted to check out Locked Inn in Grover Beach for some time. I tried scheduling with friends, but our schedules kept conflicting, so I decided to see if my nephews would be interested in going with me. They were, in fact so was my sister and brother-in-law.
Locked Inn is a live escape room where you and your group, between 4 and 8 people, try to escape from the room by solving puzzles based on clues you find. It was started in August 2015 by husband and wife team, Patrick and Mariah, and the two continue to design and run the place. They are a wonderful, fun, and energetic couple. Their excitement for new guests to come and try out their escape room shows in their smiles and enthusiasm as they brief you on what to expect during your "stay".
My family and I headed down to Grover this past Saturday; our "check-in" reservations were for noon. We arrived a bit early - early enough to grab a quick before picture.
A little before noon, the doors opened and we were greeted by Mariah. She opened lockers for us to store our belongings and she and her husband ran through the briefings.
They explained to us the premise - we will be locked in a room and it will be up to us to find our way out by looking for clues and solving puzzles. They gave us tips and things to remember, such as work together and stay organized. They also pointed out that there would be many things in the room placed just to throw us off. Not everything is a clue or part of the escape challenge.
I had visions of The Amazing Race and Survivor, and their various challenges and puzzles. I also had visions of how teams would argue and scream at each other during Amazing Race Detours. I hope that's not us!
We are provided instructions to our room and told when our time starts, so no time to dawdle. We have 1 hour to gather our clues, solve our puzzles, and escape.
Ready. Set. Go!
Wait, my brother-in-law suddenly has a locked suitcase in his hand. When did that happen? The game is afoot! The challenge has begun - we must unlock it!
I won't give away all the details because you have to check it out for yourself, but I will say this: Stay organized!! That was our biggest downfall and time waster. Our final escape time was 1 hour and 7 minutes.
We had so much fun and can't wait for the next room, coming later this summer. Follow their Facebook page here for updates.
If you are interested, and have a group of 4-8 people, you should go. My sister was skeptical about going at first. She was afraid of being claustrophobic because of being locked into a room, but:
My sister got so into it by the end that she was screaming excitedly when puzzles were solved and clues were found, like randomly exclaiming things like, "It's a magnet! It's a magnet! It's a really strong magnet!"
It was really a great time. We can't wait for the new room!
