"Time passes so fast. Make time to be still." ~ Lailah Gifty Akita
Few things are more relaxing than a spa retreat. Being papered makes you feel like a Princess, and who doesn't love that?
When my friend Alison asked me to plan a quick spa getaway for her birthday, I jumped at the opportunity. I love planning, plus I'm working towards launching a travel planning business (more info to come soon on that!!).
I did some research on everything from day use to weekend spa retreats. Since we were working on a tight budget, I narrowed my focus to more local spa services. In my search, I found River Oaks Spa in Paso Robles. They have mineral spas, massages, and facials. You can book separately, combine services, or take advantage of one of several package deals. Each service, including packages, come with time in one of their mineral spas.
The prices are average to other spas in the area, but their packages are where the deals are.
For Alison's birthday spa retreat I suggested "Afternoon at the Spa". For $125 per person, you get 30 minutes in the mineral spa along with a glass of champagne, a 30 minute Swedish massage, and a 30 minute Express Facial. It's a great offer and within our price range so I called and made the reservations.
When we arrived at the spa, we were greeted with friendly staff who gave us our instructions of where to go and what to do, along with keys to our lockers. The lockers, showers, and bathroom were all clean and well kept. Inside our locker was a towel, flip flops, and a robe all bundled together.
We changed into our bathing suits and we went into an open air mineral spa suite. Once again, everything was nice and clean and in good condition. There wasn't even that disgusting rotten egg smell like other mineral spring spas have. The water temperature was perfect, right around 101*. As we were settling in, they brought us our glass, er plastic tumbler, of champagne. That's probably not the classiest way to drink champagne, but hey - it worked!
So far, so good...everything was so relaxing!
After our 1/2 hour was up, Alison went to her facial and I went into my torture chamber, I mean "massage" room. I did not enjoy my massage at all. Not one bit. My masseuse never asked about the pressure she was applying, whether too soft, too hard, or just right. It was awful. My lady seemed to be practicing her WWE Piledriver moves and proceeded to jam her boney elbow up and down my back and shoulders.
It was exactly like that scene in "Friends" where Monica claims she gives the best massages.
After the world's longest 30 minutes was up, I went in for my facial and Alison went in for her massage. Luckily for her, she was getting a different masseuse.
My facial with Mallory was perfect and I was glad to be back on the relaxing side of things. 30 minutes of face exfoliating bliss... Although, honestly, she could've been burning my face off with cleansers and it would've been more relaxing. Fortunately she wasn't and the facial was just what I needed. Another glass of champagne might've helped too.
After all of our services were over, we cleaned up, changed clothes, and headed out. Alison and I compared massage notes and it did appear that I got shafted on mine. Her massage with Gloria was perfect. I'm so jealous.
I wouldn't mind going there again, but I'll be sure and ask for specific people (or specifically not request someone) because otherwise the experience was fun. It might even be fun to visit with your honey in tow for a couple of their packages. For you guys, always wondering what to get your ladies - spa services or spa packages And flowers. Just sayin'...
